Tackling Unit One

During Unit One, we prioritized learning about the game industry and how it's evolved. While we had done units similar to this one in past years, this one was particularly in-depth and covered topics like professional positions, the history of video games, and the ethics and rating system.

The assignment covering professions really stood out to me this year because it forced me to think about what part of the industry I wanted to pursue. In the past, I let my appreciation for all aspects of the industry overshadow the real-world application of the skills I'm learning. I still struggle to pick just one profession because I like almost every one for different reasons, but now the issue is actually on my mind, which is a good start.

Our game History unit pushed us to think outside the box as well. We were required to trace games back to their ancient predecessors and draw connections that we'd never explored before.

I also thought the section on ethics and the video game rating system was fascinating. We had skimmed over the basic guidelines before but, we had never learned about how those guidelines came to be. I never knew about the court case between angry parents and game companies, and how that shaped the rating system we use today.

All of these assignments allowed us to look at the industry in a whole new light, and I can't wait to dive into the rest of the year.
