Back to the 3DS Max Grind

  • What techniques came back to you quickly?

  • What did you struggle with?

  • How did you overcome the problems you experienced?

  • What did you learn from creating the fire hydrant?

Recently, we were tasked with modeling a high poly fire hydrant in 3D Studio Max. This assignment is the first of many to require us to work in digital 3D art spaces this year, and overall I felt pretty good about it. There were definitely hiccups and mishaps, as there always are in this program, and those were challenging to get through but the end result wasn't too shabby for being the first model I've made in such a long time.

It was interesting relearning all the shortcuts and features from so long ago. All of the modular design tools came back to me pretty quickly and I recognized all the modifiers we used but I had forgotten the effects each one could have and the creative ways they could be used. The biggest challenge me and my groupmates faced was complications with the way polygons aligned after using Proboolean. Looking back, there are things I would have done differently but at least I know for next time. I wish we had a bit more time to polish this project up but for now it's on to the next.
